Gulfton Revitalization

The Gulfton Revitalization project is a collaboration between METRO, City of Houston, Harris County Precinct 4 and other partners to improve services and infrastructure in the Gulfton community.

Key partnerships include:

A 4.1-mile dedicated bus lane connecting the Gulfton community to key job centers in the Galleria, Downtown Houston and Texas Medical Center. Designed to provide fast, reliable service, the project will serve major residential areas and important community destinations such as parks, health services and community centers.

METRO also recently secured a $1.2 million planning grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to work with Harris County Precinct 4, the City of Houston and the Gulfton community to develop a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Plan for areas along METRO's proposed Gulfton bus lane project. The planning process will result in a comprehensive TOD strategy focused on enhancing mobility, housing and community development in one of Houston's most transit dependent areas. The planning process is expected to begin in mid-2025.

Status: The project is currently in the project development stage with 10% design completed.

Harris County Precinct 4 is investing in major masterplans and improvement projects at Burnett Bayland Park and Bayland Park. The county has also partnered with the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA), and Gulfton and Southwest Management Districts, on a safety improvement project under the American Rescue Plan Act Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (ARPA CPTED).

METRO is also in partnership with Harris County Precinct 4 to invest in several projects, including the installation of 200 bus shelters in the Gulfton community through a $6.2 million investment.

Status: Precinct 4 has procured a designer and is coordinating with METRO on the site selection process and design prototypes.

The City of Houston is investing in the Gulfton community using a $43.4M grant from the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) for the Resilient Communities: Gulfton and Kashmere Gardens Sidewalks Project, and a $690,200 grant for Reconnecting Communities: Gulfton and Beyond project. METRO is partnering with the City of Houston to advance some of the planning work required due to the impact it will have on the transit system.

These coordinated efforts are set to revitalize the Gulfton community by improving transportation, public safety and infrastructure.
