The above table serves as a snapshot of the typical factors that impact ridership, and illustrates the differences which exist between the current month and the same month in the previous year. If a change occurred, it is categorized to represent a (typically) positive, negative or neutral impact on ridership. More details on the observed impacts are noted in the description of ridership results below.

Local Bus

Monthly Total

There were 4,680K boardings in December 2018 compared to 4,614K in December 2017, an increase of 66K boardings (or 1 percent) on local bus service. There was no change in calendar mix in December 2018 relative to December 2017. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve fell on Weekday in 2018 compared to Sunday in 2017, therefore, an increase in ridership would be expected with change in holiday mix.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership increased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in December 2018 compared to December 2017. Average Weekday ridership increased by approximately 10K boardings (or 6 percent), average Saturday ridership increased by approximately 1K boardings (or 1 percent) and average Sunday ridership increased by approximately 1K (or 1 percent), in December 2018 compared to December 2017.

​Light Rail

Monthly Total

There were 1,337K boardings on all three light rail lines in December 2018 compared to 1,309K boardings in December 2017, an increase of 28K boardings (or 2 percent). Red line ridership increased by 2 percent, Green line ridership increased by 6 percent, and Purple line ridership increased by 6 percent in December 2018 compared to December 2017. The primary factors contributing to the increase was that last year there were an additional Houston Texans’ home football game and two fewer service interruption days in December 2018 compared to December 2017.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average Weekday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines increased by 1K boardings (or 2 percent), increased by less than 1K boardings (or 7 percent) and increased by less than 1K boardings (or 11 percent) respectively in December 2018 compared to December 2017. Average Saturday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by less than 1K boardings (or than 3 percent), increased by less than 1K boardings (or 7 percent), and increased by less than 1K boardings or (or 11 percent) respectively in December 2018 compared to December 2017.  Average Sunday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines increased by less than 1K (or 1 percent), increased by less than 1K boardings (or 6 percent), and increased by less than 1K boardings (or 1 percent) respectively in December 2018 compared to December 2017 respectively.

Monthly Total

There were approximately 6,017K boardings in December 2018 compared to approximately 5,923K in December 2017, an increase of approximately 94K boardings (or 2 percent).

Average local network increased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in December 2018 compared to December 2017. Average Weekday ridership increased by approximately 12K boardings (or 5 percent), average Saturday ridership increased by approximately 1K boardings (or 1 percent) and average Sunday ridership increased by approximately 1K boardings (or 1 percent) in December 2018 compared to December 2017.

Monthly Total

There were approximately 485K Park and Ride boardings in December 2018 compared to approximately 490K boardings in December 2017, a decrease of 4K boardings (or 1 percent).

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday

Average Weekday ridership in December 2018 was approximately 27K boardings compared to approximately 25K boardings December 2017, an increase of 2K boardings (or 10 percent).

Entire Network Summary

Monthly Total

There were 6,502K boardings on the entire fixed-route network in December 2018 compared to approximately 6,413K boardings in December 2017, an increase of 89K boardings (or 1 percent).  Relevant factors were noted earlier and are included in the table above.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership for the fixed-route network increased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in December 2018 compared to December 2017. Average weekday ridership increased by approximately 14K boardings (or 6 percent), average Saturday ridership increased by approximately 1K boardings (or 1 percent) and average Sunday ridership increased by approximately 1K (or 1 percent) in December 2018 compared to December 2017.
