Executive Summary

Ridership Factors This Month

The above table serves as a snapshot of the typical factors that impact ridership, and illustrates the differences which exist between the current month and the same month in the previous year. If a change occurred, it is categorized to represent a (typically) positive, negative or neutral impact on ridership. More details on the observed impacts are noted in the description of ridership results below.

Local Network Overview

Monthly Total

There were 5,547K boardings in October 2017 compared to 5,185K in October 2016, an increase of 362K boardings (or 7 percent increase) on local bus service. A favorable calendar mix of one more weekday and one fewer Saturday relative to the previous year contributed to ridership gain. In addition, METRO extended free rides to students through October 31, 2017.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership increased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in October 2017 compared to October 2016. Green and Purple line ridership increased by 98 percent and 44 percent respectively, while Red line ridership increased by 8% in October 2017 compared to October 2016. Special event days were a major factor in the ridership gain over the previous year. The Houston Astros post-season run (two American League Divisional series playoff home games, four American League Championship series playoff home games, three World Series home games, and three watch parties at home) resulted in twelve additional special event days for all three rail lines relative to the previous year. A favorable calendar mix of one additional weekday and one fewer Saturday contributed to the higher ridership in October 2017 relative to October 2016. Another contributing factor to the higher ridership were the free fares METRO offered to all students throughout the month of October. Additionally, there was a free fare day (October 19, 2017) for University of Houston students compared.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average Weekday on all three lines increased by 6K (or 11 percent in October 2017 compared to October 2016). Average Saturday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines increased by 4 percent, 62 percent and 21 percent. (NOTE: Due to special events, there were no true “average” Saturdays on the Purple line in October 2017. The average Saturday ridership reflects the average of the special events.) Average Sunday ridership on the Green and Purples lines increased by 59% and 16% respectively while average Sunday ridership on the Red line decreased by 10% relative to October 2016.
