Local Bus

Monthly Total

There were 4,155K boardings in August 2017 compared to 5,045K in August 2016, a decrease of 891K boardings (or 18 percent decrease) on local bus service.

Hurricane Harvey brought a significant amount of rain and flooding throughout the METRO service area. The impacts of this natural disaster led to a suspension of service for all METRO services between Sunday, August 27 and Wednesday, August 30, 2017. METRO restored local bus service in a phased approach beginning on Thursday, August 31, 2017.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership increased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in August 2017 compared to August 2016. Average Weekday ridership increased by 2K boardings (or 1 percent increase), average Saturday ridership increased by approximately 2K (or 1 percent increase), and average Sunday ridership increased by 6K boardings (or 7 percent increase) in August 2017.

​Light Rail

Monthly Total

There were 1,276K boardings on all three light rail lines in August 2017, compared to 1,519K boardings in August 2016, a decrease of 243K boardings (or 16 percent). Green line ridership increased by 30 percent, while Purple and Red line ridership decreased by 8% and 19% respectively in August 2017 compared to August 2016. The major contributing factor to the ridership decrease was the suspension of service for all METRO services between Sunday, August 27 and Wednesday, August 30, 2017. METRO restored rail service in a phased approach beginning with the Red line and then extending to the Green and Purple lines. Another factor in the Red line ridership decrease was the cancellation of one of the scheduled Houston Texans preseason football games which was cancelled due to the hurricane. In addition, there were five additional service interruptions in August 2017 compared to August 2016.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average Weekday light rail ridership on all three lines increased by 2K (or 3 percent) in August 2017 compared to August 2016. Due to two weekend service interruptions, a Houston Texans’ preseason football game and Hurricane Harvey, there were no average Saturdays on the Red line during August 2017. Average Saturday light rail ridership increased by 2K (or 42 percent) on the Green and Purple lines combined. Average Sunday light rail ridership on all three lines increased by 2K (or 7 percent). Average Weekday ridership on the Red line decreased by 1 percent while average Sunday ridership decreased by 3 percent in August 2017 compared to August 2016. Average Weekday, Saturday and Sunday ridership on the Green line increased by 60 percent, 65 percent, and 77 percent while average Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday ridership on the Purple line increased by 17 percent, 25 percent, and 41 percent in August 2017 compared to August 2016 respectively.

There were 5,431K boardings in August 2017 compared to 6,564K in August 2016, a decrease of 1.1M boardings (or 17 percent decrease).

Average Weekday ridership increased by 4K boardings (or 2 percent increase) in August 2017 compared to August 2016. Average Saturday ridership for the local bus and Green and Purple rail lines increased by approximately 4K boardings (or 3 percent increase) in August 2017 compared to August 2016. Average Sunday ridership increased by approximately 8K boardings (or 7 percent increase) in August 2017 compared to August 2016.

​Commuter Network Overview

Park & Ride

Monthly Total

There were 574K Park and Ride boardings in August 2017 compared to 739K boardings in August 2016, a decrease of approximately 166K boardings (or 22 percent decrease). This decrease in total boardings is primarily due to the suspension of METRO Park & Ride services between Monday, August 28, 2017 and Friday, September 1, 2017.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday

Average Weekday ridership in August 2017 was 31K boardings compared to 30K boardings August 2016, an increase of less than 1K boardings (or 2 percent increase).

Entire Network Summary

Monthly Total

There were 6,005K boardings on the entire fixed-route network in August 2017 compared to 7,303K boardings in August 2016, a decrease of 1.3M boardings (or 18 percent decrease). Relevant factors were noted earlier and are included in the table above.

Average daily ridership for the fixed-route network increased on Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday in August 2017 compared to August 2016. Average weekday ridership increased by approximately 5K boardings (or 2 percent increase), average Saturday ridership for local bus and Green and Purple rail lines increased by 4K boardings (or 3 percent increase), and average Sunday ridership increased by approximately 8K boardings (or 7 percent increase) in August 2017 compared to August 2016.
