Local Bus

Monthly Total

There were 5,047K boarding in January 2020 compared to approximately 4,909K in January 2019, an increase of 138K boardings (or 3 percent) on local bus service. The primary factor contributing to the ridership increase there was two weather days in January 2020 compared to three weather days in January 2019.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership increased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday. Weekday average daily ridership increased by approximately 1K boardings (or less than 1 percent), Saturday average daily ridership increased by approximately 4K boardings (or 3 percent) and Sunday average daily ridership increased by approximately 3K (or 3 percent) in January 2020 compared to January 2019.

​Light Rail

Monthly Total

There were 1,523K boardings on all three light rail lines and in January 2020 compared to 1,473K boardings on all three light rail lines and zero boardings on bus bridges in January 2019, an increase of 50K boardings (or 3 percent). Red line ridership increased by 2 percent, Green line ridership increased by 6 percent, and Purple line ridership increased by 11 percent in January 2020 compared to January 2019. There was one fewer service interruption in January 2020 compared to January 2019. METRORail would have expected a positive increase in ridership as a result.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average Weekday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by less than 1K boardings (or less than 1 percent), increased by less than 1K boardings (or 5 percent) and increased by less than 1K boardings (or 11 percent) respectively in January 2020 compared to January 2019. Average Saturday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 2K boardings (or 8 percent), increased by less than 1K boardings (or 6 percent), and increased by less than 1K boardings (or 5 percent) respectively in January 2020 compared to January 2019. Average Sunday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by less than 1K (or 5 percent), increased by less than 1K boardings (or 5 percent), and increased by less than 1K boardings (or 5 percent) respectively in January 2020 compared to January 2019.

There were 6,570K boardings in January 2020 compared to approximately 6,382K in January 2019, an increase of 188K boardings (or 3 percent).

Average local network increased on Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday in January 2020 compared to January 2019. Average weekday ridership increased by 3K boardings (or 1 percent), average Saturday ridership increased by approximately 3K boardings (or 2 percent) and average Sunday ridership increased by approximately 2K (or 2 percent) in January 2020 compared to January 2019.

Monthly Total

There were 708K Park and Ride boardings in January 2020 compared to approximately 659K boardings in January 2019, an increase of 49K boardings (or 7 percent).

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday

Average Weekday ridership in January 2020 was approximately 33K boardings compared to approximately 31K boardings January 2019, an increase of approximately 2K boardings (or 6 percent).

Entire Network Summary

Monthly Total

There were 7,278K boardings on the entire fixed-route network in January 2020 compared to approximately 7,041K boardings in January 2019, an increase of 237K boardings (or 3 percent). Relevant factors were noted earlier and are included in the table above. 

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average local network increased on Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday in December 2019 compared to December 2018. Average weekday ridership increased by approximately 1K boardings (or less than 1 percent), average Saturday ridership increased by 2K boardings (or 1 percent) and average Sunday ridership increased by 8K (or 7 percent) in December 2019 compared to December 2018.
