On a hot summer day, there's nothing quite like enjoying a cool treat. That’s one reason METRO's Safety and Human Resources Departments teamed up to organize an educational event focused on heat safety for employees.

While the tropical-themed occasion was a welcome respite from Houston's blazing heat, the main mission was to distribute information about the signs of heat illness and how to avoid it.

As a sign of solidarity with those affected by the recent wildfires on Maui, everyone attending received a lei to wear while enjoying a variety of ice cream flavors and frozen treats in the second-floor lobby at 1900 Main.

Attendees also received gift bags filled with items like sunglasses, water bottles, fans, and cooling towels.

Employees received printed handouts with information about heat illness and how to avoid it.

Sheron Blaylock, director of METRO Benefits, Pension, Wellness, and HRIS, emphasized the significance of helping ensure employee safety and comfort during the hottest summer in Houston history.

“METRO is invested in the well-being of its employees,” said Blaylock. "A goal of this event was to help people to understand the importance of proper hydration and other strategies that can help them maintain their physical well-being during triple-digit temps.”

"We want to emphasize that employee safety is a top priority at this agency," said METRO Transit Safety Education Programs Manager Ramona Crayton. "However, it was also a great opportunity for METRO to show its appreciation for the hard work and passion folks at the Authority have for making our region a better place.”

Crayton highlighted the ice cream social as a shining example of teamwork, underscoring the collaboration between Human Resources and Safety in crafting a truly memorable experience. She enthusiastically shared that both departments are planning for upcoming events at other METRO locations.

Safety Education Representative Brittany Buchana and Sr. Fare Media Associate Trang Diep exchanged stories and shared laughs.
