METRO Breaks Ground on New Facility to Improve Rail Service and Efficiency

In December, METRO officially broke ground on its new 30,000-square-foot Maintenance of Way (MOW) Facility, marking a major milestone in the agency’s efforts to enhance efficiency, safety, and reliability.

Located near the Burnett Transit Center, the facility is designed to support the Red, Green, and Purple lines by serving as a centralized hub for repairs and maintenance.

The MOW Facility will revolutionize METRORail operations with faster incident response times and improved resources for maintenance crews.

"As part of our METRONow plan for 2025 and beyond, we are working to increase our on-time performance and reliability," said Board First Vice Chair Bob Fry at the event. "Our goal through METRONow is to earn our customers’ trust each day with improvements and service upgrades that will improve their experience and make them excited to choose METRO."

The facility will feature:

  • A 3,500-square-foot maintenance shop
  • A storage warehouse and laydown yard
  • Surface parking and storm water detention infrastructure.

The project also includes improvements to Brooks and Keene streets, with new sidewalks, street enhancements, and better drainage to benefit the surrounding community.

Scheduled for completion in July 2026, the MOW Facility is the final project tied to the Red Line extension and a crucial step toward building a world-class transit network for the Houston region.
