Fallbrook Bus Operators Spread Holiday Cheer to Students
This holiday season, employees at METRO’s Fallbrook Bus Operating Facility (BOF) embraced the spirit of giving by hosting their annual Adopt-A-School Toy Drive. The celebration brought joy to 50 third graders from J. Ruth Smith Elementary School.
“It’s all about giving back! Our METRO operators work hard to do what they can to give back,” said Fallbrook Superintendent Gillian Pugh. “We try to make sure we reach the kids that wouldn’t ordinarily get presents.”
The year-long effort begins with staff raising funds by selling meal plates to their coworkers. A school is then carefully selected to ensure their efforts make the greatest impact.
Last year, the celebration was brought to a school campus and students were gifted tablets.
“A lot of our kids don’t get to have Christmas. Some of them have economic challenges,” said Cheryl Simmons, a third grade teacher at the school. “These events give them hope and lets them know that there’s people out there that love them.”
The event was filled with excitement from the very beginning, as students arrived and were greeted by Santa Claus. The day included four hours of pizza, crafts, games, and prizes, creating lasting memories for all involved.
“I am going to help my family,” said Victoria, a student who won a cash prize at the event.
In addition to wrapped toys, students received brand-new bikes and stockings filled with goodies.
For the Fallbrook team, the payoff comes from seeing the joy their hard work brings.
“I enjoy seeing the look on their faces when they get their gifts,” said Assistant Superintendent John Olivares. “It’s our way of giving back to the community on a smaller scale, but it makes a big difference.”
