METRO Amps Up Efforts to Create Better Bus Stops
METRO is committed to reimagining public transportation with the aim of improving the commute experience. That includes a focus on creating a better, more comfortable stop. A major element of the METRONext Moving Forward Plan is a dedicated focus on improving bus shelters, which helps enhance convenience and comfort.
Recognizing the pivotal role that bus stops play in customer satisfaction, METRO has embarked on a comprehensive effort to upgrade existing facilities and build new ones.
More BOOST Stops Rolling Your Way
Central to the METRONext Moving Forward Plan is the revitalization of bus stops along well-traveled METRO routes. METRO is actively enhancing more than 300 stops along its high-traffic 54 Scott and 56 Airline/Montrose, both of which connect people to downtown Houston, educational institutions, and the Texas Medical Center. The bustling 82 Westheimer route is also slated for BOOST enhancements.
Anticipated upgrades encompass advanced lighting, elevated safety features, improved accessibility, and dynamic real-time digital information displays.
Exploring a Cool Concept for Commutes
Houston's sweltering summers underscore the need for refuge from the scorching sun. While existing bus shelters already provide essential shade, METRO is exploring a cool concept - introducing a groundbreaking bus shelter prototype designed to keep riders more comfortable on hot days. The design features solar-powered fans that circulate air throughout the bus shelter. The shelter's solar panels can also harness energy to power lighting and those real-time digital displays showcasing bus arrival and departure information.
METRO Chief Operating Officer Chuck Berkshire said engineering teams continue to refine the design and functionality of the prototype. METRO is also exploring ways to adjust the size of structures to align with specific sidewalk segments.
This includes considering the inclusion of two-seat benches instead of three, with the intention of better accommodating wheelchair users.
Transforming Standard Shelters
Construction and installation efforts are also ongoing for METRO's standard shelters. The momentum behind the Authority’s efforts is evident. Over the next twenty-four months, the Authority plans to install 800 new shelters, with the potential for
further expansion by an additional 1200 over the subsequent three years. The first group of shelters is expected to debut next month.
Your Feedback Matters
By providing not only reliable transit services but also upgraded facilities, METRO aims to provide a comfortable commuting experience for all customers, and community input is critical.
As METRO continues to look for ways to provide a better walk, a better stop, and a better ride, the Authority encourages you to share your thoughts.
