Safety Vision: New Monitors Coming to METRO Buses
The safety of customers and employees has always been METRO’s top priority. As part of our continuous effort to enhance safety and provide a better ride, new security screen monitors are being installed on METRO’s bus fleet.
While nearly all METRO buses already have surveillance cameras, security monitors will provide a live-feed display of onboard activity. The monitors will also provide passengers with real-time information, including service announcements and security alerts.
Monitors have been installed on 190 local buses and 14 METRORapid buses. On local buses the system includes a 15-inch monitor in the driver’s area and a 32-inch monitor in the passenger area. METRORapid buses will be outfitted with five 15-inch monitors located at each passenger door and two 32-inch monitors in the front and rear passenger cabins.
METRO Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Chuck Berkshire said the project, began as a pilot several years ago, and feedback from both customers and employees has been positive.
“METRO is always looking for opportunities to create the safest environment it can for bus operators and customers and new security monitors will be installed on every new bus that METRO purchases,” said Berkshire. “It’s all part of METRO’s ongoing commitment to providing safe, clean, reliable, accessible, and friendly public transportation services to the Houston region.”
