Monthly Total

There were 5,096K boardings in November 2017 compared to 4,908K in November 2016, an increase of 188.2K boardings (or 4 percent increase) on local bus service. There was no change in the calendar mix relative to the previous year. METRO would have expected no change in ridership.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership increased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in November 2017 compared to November 2016.  Average Weekday ridership increased by 4K boardings (or 2 percent increase), average Saturday ridership increased by approximately 6K (or 5 percent increase), and average Sunday ridership increased by 7K boardings (or 7 percent increase) in November 2017 compared to November 2016. 

​Light Rail

There were 1,651K boardings on all three light rail lines in November 2017 compared to 1,437K boardings in November 2016, an increase of 214K boardings (or 15 percent). Green and Purple line ridership increased by 157 percent and 36 percent respectively, while Red line ridership increased by 9 percent in November 2017 compared to November 2016. Special event days were a major factor in the ridership gain over the previous year. METRO set a single-day light rail ridership record on Friday, November 3, 2017 when the Houston Astros were honored in the 2017 World Series parade. Overall, there were nine additional special event days for all three rail lines relative to the previous year. Another major factor to the higher ridership this year was the difference in the number of service interruptions. There were zero service interruptions on the three rail lines in November 2017 compared to two each on the Red and Purple lines and seven on the Green line in November 2016.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average Weekday on all three lines increased by 5K (or 9 percent in November 2017 compared to November 2016). Average Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday ridership increased on all three rail lines relative to November 2016. Average Weekday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines increased by 3 percent, 93 percent, and 31 percent respectively in November 2017 compared to November 2016. Average Saturday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines increased by 6 percent, 111 percent and 57 percent respectively when compared to November 2016. Average Sunday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purples lines increased by 4 percent, 67 percent and 27 percent respectively relative to November 2016.

There were 6,747K boardings in November 2017 compared to 6,345K in November 2016, an increase of 402K boardings (or 6 percent increase).

Average Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday ridership increased by 10K, 11K, and 9K boardings respectively (or 4 percent, 7 percent, and 8 percent increase respectively) in November 2017 compared to November 2016.

There were 624K Park and Ride boardings in November 2017 compared to 634K boardings in November 2016, a decrease of approximately 10K boardings (or 2 percent decrease).

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday

Average Weekday ridership in November 2017 was 32K boardings compared to 32K boardings November 2016, a slight decrease of less than 1K boardings (or 1 percent decrease).

Entire Network Summary

Monthly Total

There were 7,370K boardings on the entire fixed-route network in November 2017 compared to 6,979K boardings in November 2016, an increase of 391K boardings (or 6 percent increase). Relevant factors were noted earlier and are included in the table above.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership for the fixed-route network increased on Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday in November 2017 compared to November 2016. Average weekday ridership increased by approximately 9K boardings (or 3 percent increase), average Saturday ridership increased by 11K boardings (or 7 percent increase), and average Sunday ridership increased by approximately 9K boardings (or 8 percent increase) in November 2017 compared to November 2016.
