Executive Summary

Ridership Factors This Month

The above table serves as a snapshot of the typical factors that impact ridership, and illustrates the differences which exist between the current month and the same month in the previous year.  If a change occurred, it is categorized to represent a (typically) positive, negative or neutral impact on ridership.  More details on the observed impacts are noted in the description of ridership results below.

Local Network Overview

Local Bus

Monthly Total

There were 4,655,321 boardings in July 2016 on local bus service. This is a decrease of -111,529 boardings (or 2 percent decrease) compared to July 2015. An unfavorable calendar mix of two fewer weekdays and one more Saturday and Sunday relative to the previous year accounted for approximately 88 percent of the ridership loss. In addition, weather negatively impacted ridership on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 with over 2 inches of rain.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average Weekday ridership decreased by 4,087 boardings (or approximately 2 percent decrease) in July 2016 compared to 2015. Large ridership growth on Saturday (approximately 8 percent) and Sunday (approximately 35 percent) continues the healthy trend observed post-New Bus Network implementation.

Light Rail

Monthly Total

There were 1,436,306 boardings on all three light rail lines in July 2016. This is an increase of 38,068 boardings (or 3 percent increase) over July 2015. The Green and Purple lines showed year-over-year growth; Red line boardings decreased slightly by -12,124 boardings (-1%).

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership on Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday all increased in 2016 compared to 2015. Weekday average daily ridership increased by 4,619 boardings (or 9 percent), Saturday average daily ridership increased by 348 boardings (or 1 percent), and Sunday average daily ridership increased by 1,842 (or 9 percent).

Total Local Network

Monthly Total

Local network ridership decreased in 2016 compared to the previous year by -73,461 boardings (a decrease of 1 percent) due to the factors noted earlier.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership increased on Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday on the local network. Saturday and Sunday ridership increased by 6% and 28%, respectively while weekday ridership increased by less than 1 percent. The large Saturday and Sunday increases experienced in 2016 compared to 2015 result from increased service levels on the weekend in the New Bus Network, as well as other factors noted earlier.

Commuter Network Overview

Park & Ride

Monthly Total

There were 615,848 Park & Ride boardings in July 2016 compared to 737,898 boardings in July 2015, a decrease of 122,050 boardings (or a loss of 17 percent). The calendar mix impact of two fewer weekday and the economy are the primary factors contributing to the year-to-year decrease.

Average Daily Ridership:  Weekday

Average weekday ridership in July 2016 was 30,648 boardings, a decrease of 3,018 boardings compared to July 2015 (a 9 percent loss). Again, the continued economic downturn is a contributing factor to the loss in average weekday ridership relative to July 2015.

Entire Network Summary

Monthly Total

Ridership on the entire fixed-route network in July 2016 decreased by 3 percent compared to the previous year. Relevant factors were noted earlier and are included in the factors table above.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership for the entire fixed-route network increased on Saturday and Sunday, with the weekend showing large gains due to increased service levels on local bus, the bus-rail interface, and growth on the Red, Green, and Purple rail lines. Average Weekday ridership decreased by 1% year over year for the reasons noted earlier.
