Executive Summary

Ridership Factors This Month

The above table serves as a snapshot of the typical factors that impact ridership, and illustrates the differences which exist between the current month and the same month in the previous year.  If a change occurred, it is categorized to represent a (typically) positive, negative or neutral impact on ridership.   More details on the observed impacts are noted in the description of ridership results below.

Local Network Overview

Local Bus

Monthly Total

There were 5,091K boardings in March 2017 compared to 5,002K in March 2016, an increase of 89K boardings (or two percent increase) on local bus service. The calendar mix of Good Friday and Easter both falling in March 2016 (NOTE: These holidays will fall in April 2017.) contributed to the year-over-year ridership increase. There was significant rainfall on March 5, 11 and 29 in 2017 as compared to no significant weather impact last year.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership increased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in March 2017 compared to 2016. Average Weekday ridership increased by approximately 2K boardings (or 1 percent increase). Saturday average daily ridership increased by 4K (or 4 percent increase), and Sunday average daily ridership increased by 2K boardings (or 2 percent increase) in 2017.

Light Rail

Monthly Total

There were 2,102K boardings on all three light rail lines in March 2017, compared to 1,966K boardings in March 2016, an increase of 135K boardings (or 7 percent increase). All three light rail lines recorded increased ridership over March 2016. Green and Purple line ridership increased by 65% and 30% respectively, while Red line ridership increased by 3% in March 2017 compared to March 2016. There were two additional factors which contributed to a ridership increase. First, the Green line was extended to Magnolia Park Transit Center on February 11, 2017. Second, there was an increase in ridership due to the scheduling of the 2017 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR). In 2017, all twenty-three days of the HLSR were in March as compared to 2016 when three of the twenty-three days were in February, resulting in an additional three days of Rodeo ridership relative to March 2016. While the Red line had a ridership increase over the previous year, the continued economic downturn in the Houston area was a contributing factor to its lower ridership gain relative to Green and Purple lines.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average light rail Weekday ridership increased by 3K (or 4%) in March 2017 compared to March 2016. Average Saturday and Sunday daily ridership increased on the Green line (73% and 77%, respectively) as well as on the Purple line (29% and 23%, respectively). Due to the scheduling of the 2017 HLSR and weather days, there were no average Saturdays or Sundays on the Red line in March 2017. As stated in the paragraph above, the Green line was extended to Magnolia Park Transit Center on January 11, 2017, resulting in two additional stations relative to the previous year.
